2,600 People Join MGM Macau Eco Trailhiker Celebrating the 10th Anniversary with New Eco Initiatives

Macau, 2 November 2019 – The 10thMGM Macau Eco TrailHiker took place today at MGM COTAI. As it was the first large group hiking challenge held in Macau for 10 consecutive years, the route went along different scenic natural trails in Coloane, exploring the greener side of Macau. The event attracted 2,600 participants from a total of 650 teams competing for top honors in three race categories: 10km Fun Course, 20km & 30km corporate challenge.
The 10km kickoff ceremony was officiated by Mr. Robert J. Kirby and Mr. Kowie Geldenhuys, Directors of Macau TrailHiker Ltd. together with Mr. Wan Sucheng, Director of the Department of Publicity and Culture of the Liaison Office of the Central People‘s Government in the Macao S.A.R, Ms. Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, Director of Macao Government Tourism Office, Mr. Allen Lau Cho Un, Vice President of Sports Bureau of Macao S.A.R, Mr. Andrew Leong, Department Head of Social Welfare Bureau of Macau S.A.R, Mr. Ho Ka Wui, representative of Municipal Affairs Bureau, Mr. Grant Bowie, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of MGM China Holdings Limited, and Mr. Frederico Rosário, Director and member of Executive Committee of TDM. The ceremony was followed by a cheque presentation of a total of MOP 400,000 to The Cradle of Hope Association and The Salvation Army – Hong Kong and Macau Command as a support for their operational expenses. 30 kids from the two beneficiaries participated in the event to cheer the runners on and join the warm-up, spreading the message of healthy living together in the community.
Macau TrailHiker has been receiving massive support from the community for over 10 years. It attracted support not only from the locals, but also participants across Mainland China, Hong Kong, and overseas. All the winners of this year in each category broke the previous records with the result as followed: The winners of 10 km team, 紅纖10K隊finished the course in 45 minutes 10seconds, followed by 珠海卡神軍團and Melco 新濠天地軟足天地一號. For the 20km course, the champion was 愛華跑步-20K, finishing in 1 hour and 34 minutes 09 seconds, and the 1st runner-up and the 2nd runner-up were RunPlus 隊名我無意見 and Top Sport B respectively. For the 30 km course, the champion was 從天而降West Face, finishing in 2 hours and 27 minutes 21 seconds, and the 1st runner-up and the 2nd runner-up were 珠海第一跑團之為所欲為and 山系大叔 Type R respectively. Furthermore, to encourage more female participation for this event, the organizer continued to have the award of First All-Female team for the three categories. The winners were 越跑越FLY, Run 4 Price, 繼續五虎respectively.

Macau TrailHiker launched 10 eco action initiatives, serving as the guideline for the event by following a “Think Reusable, Not Disposable” mentality. Specifically, the organiser aimed to reduce the usage of plastic bottles and paper cups during the event and encouraged our 20km and 30km participants to bring their own bottles for the race. At the water stations, paper cups were also replaced by the reusable cups. Furthermore, the organiser recruited Eco Team Volunteers to ensure the trails were clean and to further promote eco-education. The organizer strived to raise public awareness of the ecological and environmental protection along the greener side of Macau, to encourage and call for green actions from the public.

About MGM Macau Eco Trailhiker
MGM Macau Eco Trailhiker was founded in 2010. It has grown rapidly in scale each year and has become one of the major sports events in Macau. From the inaugural event that was held at Hac Sa beach in 2010 with 560 participants, this year aims to receive a total of 2,600 participants for the 2019 event. Over 16,200 participants have joined the event over the past nine years, raising more than MOP 3 million in donations to the local community and charitable organizations.
